The adventure of post journalism
The main role of journalism has always been presenting, transferring, analyzing news to the public. To define the background, translate the subject from a specific language into an understandable one. “Journalism used to be a kind of interface between the universe and public society”, said Angelo Mellone, columnist of the Italian daily II Messagero during his conference opening speech.

The question is how to define new media and the new dimension of journalism – a “post journalism”. Networks, blogs, self-published videos, citizen journalism: These developments have in common that they reflect an authentic public opinion. “Each of you could be speaking as I am doing right now and people would listen”, Benjamin Reece stressed, the founder of Deltree, an artistic studio located in New Orleans. The number of new media users grows significantly in the same moment the numbers of newspaper readers decreases massively. During these few days of the Perugia International Journalism Festival one could hear a dozen times about the crisis of traditional media. But Angelo Mellone underlined, that this does not mean that new media will completely replace the traditional ones.
# The Hybrid creature
Changes in media are inevitable. Besides the explosion of media channels we face a decrease of content quality.
The average age of CNN viewers is 60 years. It shows that young people are not even watching TV to obtain information. They are using the Internet as the fastest way to find what they want. Although traditional media looses the battle with the new technologies they continue to provide the most reliable, deepest information. The biggest challenge for journalism is to find the balance between the old way of journalism and new technologies. And this is slowly happening. “Journalists create their own blogs to share their points of view with society”, Giuliano Da Empoli highlights. “It is the try to insert new technology into traditional media.” The result might be a hybrid.
# It’s all about trust
“Journalism is a big adventure. We should not even try to control it at this moment moment of a big change”, stressed Cristina Siveri Tagliabue, journalist at the Italian weakly Nova 24. “The point is to create something valuable, something that people will trust. Sounds good. But is it possible? Nobody could answer this question.
