Potsdam – a city between amazing history and future development

Potsdam is hosting the second time M100 Sanssouci Colloquium – let us introduce the city to you.

Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg and situated only 26 km southwest of Berlin. The city is well known for its unique cultural landscapes, in particular the parks and castles of Sanssouci or Cecilienhof. Theresa-Sarah Köpper, a member of the youthpress Brandenburg, is living in the city since 19 years and loves Potsdam: "It is a beautiful cultural city with lots of restaurants and cafes where you can relax when you are not at school. And it's way more familiar than Berlin."

The history of Potsdam dates back to the 10th century and most of the majestic buildings of Potsdam were built during the reign of Frederick the Great. The Sanssouci Palace is one of these building and since 2005 the M100 Sanssouci colloquium takes place here: "In front of the breathtaking palaces and gardens of Potsdam" as mayor Jann Jakobs highlights.

In the last century Potsdam played important roles in the history of Germany. At the beginning of the Third Reich, a ceremonial handshake between President Paul von Hindenburg and the new Chancellor Adolf Hitler took place in Potsdam's Garnisonskirche, symbolising a coalition of the military and Nazism. During the World War II, Potsdam was severely damaged. The Potsdam Conference in 1945 at the Cecilienhof palace was where the victorious Allied leaders (Harry S. Truman, Winston Churchill followed by Clement Attlee, and Josef Stalin) met to decide the future of Germany and post-war Europe in general. After the German reunification, Potsdam became the capital of the newly re-established state of Brandenburg.

Today Potsdam hosts a big university and also the College of Film and Television in Babelsberg, which has grown to the primary centre of the German film industry. Potsdam-Babelsberg also serves as one of the leading centres of European film production. Theresa-Sarah is absolutely sure about the future of the city: "Potsdam will continue to grow. Especially politicians and famous people move from Berlin to Potsdam."
